When I launched WP4FB last week, I had no clue how big it would get. Of course, I did everything within my power to make sure it went viral, but since I’m offering WP4FB for free I didn’t want to invest too much time in it as well. Right now, 1 week later, WP4FB has 400+ RT’s, 1000+ likes and welcomed more than 7.000 visitors without spending a penny on advertising. Want to know how I did that?
1. Create something valuable
The first step is to create something valuable and unique within your niche. Try to think outside the box, what does your target market care about? A quality ebook has proven to be very effective, but there are many things that work at least equally as good (e.g. *good* coupons, free software (like WP4FB), etc).
2. Give it away in return for like AND share
It’s a well-known strategy to share the giveaway with fans only in order to increase the number of “likes” on your fanpage (since they will not be able to download the giveaway without being a fan). And this strategy is enough for a fanpage to go viral and get thousands of likes, right? WRONG!
When someone “likes” your page, the message “John likes [fanpage name]” will appear on the Facebook wall of their friends, but in most cases that’s not enough to go viral. If John has liked more than one page the message will say “John likes Coca Cola and 3 other pages”. There goes your exposure… In addition, these messages will hardly show up in the “Top News” wall, which is way more popular than the “Most Recent” wall.
So, the message still needs to be spread. We’re not going to sit back and hope for the best, we’re going to make sure the message will be spread. How? By letting users “pay” with a Tweet or Facebook share in order to download the giveaway. An easy way to set this up is using CloudFloud (created by Viperchill), but you can also develop your own using the Facebook SDK (I’m thinking about including that on the next WP4FB-version, by the way). In short, users first have to “like” the page before they will see the message that they also need to spread the message in order to download the giveaway.

Note: Make sure that you present your free giveaway well at your pre-like landingspage. There’s no point in creating a good product without being able to “sell” it.
3. Get the (initial) word out
Once we’ve everything set up, it’s time to start spreading the word! An easy way to do this, is to ask some friends and acquaintances to tweet or blog about (if their readers match your target group), send an email to your email list, put it in your email footer, etc.. You can even send some emails to small blogs that are hungry for content, and will most likely put the word out as well (if your giveaway is really good). There are in fact many ways to get some initial traffic (and thus likes) going. I can recommend to go to this post, for example. Don’t go after the big fish just yet!
4. Connect with influencers to go viral
Here’s the kicker. Once you have a fair amount of likes and retweets, you are ready to go after the bigger fish. The bigger fish? Yeah: the most popular tweeps and bloggers within your niche. Normally they’re harder to convince why they should write about your free giveaway (since they get these proposals every single day), but by giving them social proof you’re already one step ahead.
One of the biggest fish in my market is Smashing Magazine, so I emailed them my pitch and included (“It’s going viral as we speak, since it already got 100+ retweets and 200+ likes in the first 2 days”). Guess what? One day later they put a tweet out, reaching more than 384.000 followers at once.
Of course there’s no guarantee that they will write about your product, but I found that adding social proof to your (short!) pitch will definitely increase your chances.
Sit back and relax?
Is it time to sit back and relax already? No way, there’s still lots to do! Make sure to subscribe to my RSS feed or follow WP4FB on twitter, and I’ll tell you all about it in the following posts.

Hi Wilco, you created a powerful tool, excellent! I looked at the demo and noticed something. When i click the tabs everything is fine and working great. When i click the hometab i get back to the home screen of the iframe as if i did’nt press the Like button before. Okay, the Like button is gone. But the same home screen. I don’t get to see the tabs and need to click my browser’s button to be able to navigate again.
So, thanks again and keep up the good work!

Thanks Carola! Yes, I’m aware of that.. A couple of hours ago I got that bug-report in my email as well! I will definitely fix that in the next version of WP4FB! Do you have any more recommendations or suggestions, on both the theme as well as this article?

The biggest issue with your idea is that not many people can produce something of as much value as what you have and then give it away for free.
For true and perceived value, this is definitely an awesome give away. I know people who have designed and now market similar WP FB programs and they have made a lot of money from them. And i think they sell them way to cheaply! So you can imagine what i thought when i saw you giving this away for free!
I would totally expect you to get 1000 likes coz what you are giving away is really valuable to a wide range of people and it isn’t your usual ebook, squeeze page or DVD ripper!
I offered $1500 worth of a product to be won by entering a comp on a fan page. 3000 impressions over 3 ads on FB and not 1 click….and I’m giving them a chance to easily enter and possibly win stuff and still not one click….imagine i was trying to sell something!
So not everyone can do what you have. So I don’t think it is accurate to suggest they could…..maybe the odd person hits on a similar type of idea but most wont or cant.
Even the experts can’t do it or wont do it so you are unique here. It’s a great offer. I know how much money you could have made so I’m thinking if you are giving this away, your upsell must be awesome and you must be expecting a good uptake. I hope so coz you deserve it for trying this! Well done! But don’t give false hope to people coz this is so far from a typical on-line experience it isn’t funny…..and that’s not being negative, its being realistic.
Cheers!

You are partly right, but like you said: most people would sell a product once they have something really valuable. However, they can also CHOOSE to give it away for free and start building a (personal) brand in the online world quite easily. Yes, you could’ve made some money in the beginning, but I believe this strategy is more powerful in the long rong.

@Scott. It’s fine giving away something that’s worth alot of cash, but you might not always achieve the targets you’re after. Like me Scott, I don’t currently have an inventive product I can give away. However whilst working for a company in the music industry we had access to prizes with high demand, prizes that money couldn’t buy (for eg in our case this was backstage passes, VIP treatment) As long as you adopt the same techniques shown above with forcing people to like your page and share to have a chance of winning this prize, demand and seeding will happen, and it will spread virally as long as you do regular mailouts and incentivise users with large networks to seed for you. The point is, you need to get your hands on something you can’t normally purchase, then follow the above techniques.

Thank you for sharing the technique on using CloudFloud, have been looking at how to do this.
Only wish there was a self hosting method. Always afraid to invest a lot of time based on others resources, as they tend to disappear and my hard work is down the drain.
But really appreciate the share,
Terry
Wilco
Thanks for your reply Terry! Maybe I’ll create (and share) a self hosted replacement for CloudFlood one day, I’ll think about it!

The theme works great! Thanks!

No problem! Glad I can help

WOW… This is really excellent ! I love what you are doing Wilco and was looking for tools like that for a while. Thanks a lot for this free service you are providing to us. I wish you all the success you deserve and will tell my friends about it.

The Facebook terms and conditions are very hard to comprehend to make sure you are inside all there terms as they seem to overlap. So by putting “access to” means you are not getting people to like to get something, and only those who take part in the second part actual “get” the promotion you are offering, not just opting in through a tweet. Clever!
